Photon upconversion (UC) is a process in which the sequential absorption of two or more photons leads to the emission of light at shorter wavelength than the excitation wavelength. It is an anti-Stokes type emission. An example is the conversion of infrared light to visible light.Upconversion can take place in both organic and inorganic materials, through a number of different mechanisms.
These white-emitting materials are environment friendly, easy to synthesize, and cost-effective. More importantly, this will potentially eliminate the challenge of rare earth resources. Furthermore, a single chip is used for excitation instead of a multichip, which can greatly reduce the cost of the devices.

Abstract A detailed investigation on the excitation mechanisms of rare-earth (RE) ions introduced in Si nanocrystals (nc) is reported. Silicon nanocrystals were produced by high-dose 80-keV Si implantation in thermally grown SiO 2 followed by 1100 °C annealing for 1 h. Subsequently some of the samples were implanted by 300-keV Er, Yb, Nd, or Tm at doses in the range 2×10 12-3×10 15 /cm 2.
To better understand and ascertain the mechanisms of flotation reagent interaction with rare earth (RE) minerals, it is necessary to determine the physical and chemical properties of the constituent components. Seven rare earth oxides (CeO2, Er2O3, Nd2O3, Tm2O3, Yb2O3, La2O3, and Tb4O7) that cover the rare earth elements (REEs) from light to heavy REEs have been investigated using Raman ...

Rare Earth is an American rock band affiliated with Motown's Rare Earth record label (named after the band), which prospered from 1970–1972. Although not the first white band signed to Motown, Rare Earth was the first big hit-making act signed by Motown that consisted only of white members.
Calculations of various electronic excitation energies for the rare earth and actinide metals are discussed. Relativistic Hartree-Fock computations for atomic configurations most closely approximating those of the metal are initially performed, and crystal potentials are constructed by means of the renormalized atom method.

It was found that all three compounds have two types of excitation and emission spectra and decay constants, and they were attributed to two Ce3+ centers (Ce1 and Ce2) occupying two different host rare earth sites. The origins of two decay constants in the gamma-ray excited decay of Gd2(SiO4)O:Ce (GSO) were investigated.

The first red emitting rare-earth phosphor, YVO 4:Eu 3+, was introduced by Levine and Palilla as a primary color in television in 1964. In single crystal form, it was used as an excellent polarizer and laser material.
